Dad obviously wasn’t going to let a small thing like ‘being dead’ interfere with his influence down at the riverbank!

It was now four months since Dad had died. I couldn’t even acknowledge that it was Fathers Day and my father-in-law got entirely missed, but he’d kindly arranged to take his grandsons, Sam and Jim, fishing for the day. Neither of the boys had ever fished before, and they were unsure about what to expect. There was a charity competition on that day and over 30 children entered including my sons.

Young Jim caught the first fish of the day, and was delighted – it was the first time he’d ever held a rod. Jim, flushed with beginner’s success, talked about my late father,

“Granddad was helping me!” he said, and we agreed.

His older brother, Sam, went on to catch the biggest carp (his Granddad’s favourite fish) and was duly honoured, ‘Fisherman of the Day.’ He was awarded his first fishing rod. Sam agreed that they hadn’t been alone on the river bank that day and the boys talked about it excitedly with their Gramps in the car on the way home. Their Gramps…and their Granddad had spent Father’s Day with their grandson’s after all.

Dad was an award-winning fisherman himself; in fact his pitch on t

Dad, fishing in his youth

he River Windrush became affectionately known as ‘Ron’s Hole;’ a name that later incorporated a whole section of the river. He had boxes of cups and trophy’s from his youth. What were the chances of both boys having such amazing ‘beginners luck’? I reflected. I couldn’t think of anywhere Dad would rather be on a sunny June day, than down the riverbank with his grandsons catching carp.

When I spoke to Mum later, I asked her, ‘guess where Dad spent today?’ She was delighted to hear about the boys’ success on their first fishing trip.

Dad could have taught his grandson’s so many angling tips and secrets had he lived; they could have gained so much from his years of experience. He’d have loved their new found enthusiasm. Tragically, just 4 months after Dad’s passing…4 months too late, his grandsons became interested in angling. Or was it too late? Dad obviously wasn’t going to let a small thing like ‘being dead’ interfere with his influence down at the riverbank!

How strange that I have never liked any angler I have ever met. For someone to catch a fish on a big hook then rip it out after watching it wriggle on a line is not a caring person. A fish may not feel, but a torn mouth makes it suffer.
by the laws of reincarnation you may be catching and tearing out your mothers mouth!
Teach the boys to love as well please
